ÑH7 [2010] AWARDS

La Voz de Cádiz, El Correo Gallego, i, Esquire, lainformacion.com y as.com, the best designed of the year

The 7th Edition of the ÑH Lo Mejor del Diseño Periodístico España&Portugal contest, hosted by the Spanish Chapter of the Society for News Design (SND-E www.snd-e.com) has already proclaimed their winners. The jury, which met in the School of Communication at the University of Navarra in Pamplona on 30th September, 1st and 2nd October, has awarded La Voz de Cádiz (Cádiz, Spain), El Correo Gallego (Santiago de Compostela, Spain), and i (Lisbon, Portugal) as the best-designed newspapers of the year; Esquire (Madrid, Spain) has been designated as the best-designed magazine, and lainformacion.com and as.com as the best designed online publications.

 

A total number of 2.384 works from 70 media from both countries participated in the contest this year, exceeding last edition’s participation record (62 media). 2.153 were from 53 printed media and 248 from 17 online publications.

 

The ÑH7 jury has awarded 160 medals all in all: 9 gold medals, 52 silver medals and 99 special mentions.

 

Furthermore, the jury designated the front cover published by La Verdad de Murcia (Murcia, Spain) on July 11th, 2010 –the day of the World Cup final in South Africa- entitled ‘History is waiting for Spain’ as the Best Front Cover of the Year in the category of newspapers. In the magazines category, the best front cover of the year was the one issued on May 30th, 2010 by el Magazine de El Mundo (Madrid, Spain), with the title ‘These feet worth a World Cup’ and including a picture from Chema Conesa.

 

 

 PRINTED MEDIA / NEWSPAPERS

La Voz de Cádiz (Cádiz, Spain) has been elected as the best designed newspaper of the year in the category "under 20,000 copies”. Heraldo de Soria (Soria, Spain) was finalist in this category.

 

In the category of “newspapers between 20,000 and 60,000 copies”, the winner has been El Correo Gallego (Santiago de Compostela, Spain) with Heraldo de Aragón (Zaragoza, Spain) as finalist.

 

In the category of “newspaper over 60,000 copies and country-wide journals”, the winner was the newspaper i (Lisbon, Portugal). Público (Madrid, Spain) was the finalist in this category.

 

The jury awarded 104 medals in the different categories involving printed newspapers: 5 gold medals, 33 silver medals and 66 special mentions.

 

PRINTED MEDIA / MAGAZINES

A total number of 35 medals were awarded in this category: 4 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 20 special mentions. The main award in this category went to Esquire (Madrid, Spain), chosen as the best designed magazine of the year, while Nuestro Tiempo (Pamplona, Spain) was the finalist in this category.

 

ONLINE PUBLICATIONS

In the online categories, the jury designated lainformacion.com (Madrid, Spain) and as.com (Madrid, Spain) as the best designed publications in the categories “over 12 million pages visited per month” and “under 12 million pages visited per month”, respectively. In this category the finalists were tv3.cat (Barcelona, Spain) and lavanguardia.es (Barcelona, Spain), respectively.

 

The jury awarded a total number of 21 medals in online categories: 8 silver medals and 13 special mentions.

 

 

THE JURY

The Jury of the contest was composed of the following members: José Manuel Freire, Editor in Chief, El Progreso (Lugo); Clara Montagut, Director of Art, Esquire (Madrid); Miguel Buckenmeyer, Director, Buckenmeyer &Co; Paulo Couto, Director of Art, Diário Económico (Lisbon); Kristina Urresti, Head of Design, Heraldo de Aragón (Zaragoza); Fran Ruano, Head of Art, Diario Sur (Málaga); Pedro Fernandes, Art Editor, i (Lisbon); and Miguel Ángel Jimeno, professor at the University of Navarra (Pamplona) in the categories corresponding to printed publications, as well as Francesc Pumarola, Head of Internet Business from canalvoz, La Voz de Galicia (A Coruña); Antonio Granado, from the site Rádio e Televisão de Portugal and professor at the Universidade Nova (Lisbon), and Carlos Cruz, Director of Art, Prisacom (Madrid)  in the categories corresponding to online publications.

 

ÑH7 CONGRESS IN VALENCIA

Moreover, the 7th edition of the annual congress ÑH will take place in Valencia from 10th to 12th November this year, hosted by the SND-E and Las Provincias (a newspaper from group Vocento). Both the program and registration form are now available on the website www.snd-e.com

 

Already confirmed speakers to the congress include Alain Blaise, Director of Art, Libération (Francia); Jared Cocken, Creative Director, thewonderfactory (United States); Craig Walker, photographer from The Denver Post and winner of the Pulitzer for photography in 2010; Nicholas Felton, designer and creator of the well-known Annual Feltron Report (United States); Jaime Serra, Head of Infographics, La Vanguardia (Spain); Martina Recchiuti, Head of the Internet edition for the Italian magazine Internazionale; Walter Mariotti and Francesco Franchi, Director and Director of Art, respectively, of the magazine IL from newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore (Italia); Paadín, creative from La Mosca studio from Barcelona (Spain); Alfredo Triviño, Director of New Projects, News Corporation (United Kingdom); Gabi Campanario, illustrator and promoter of the network urbansketchers.com (United States); Ramón Salaverría, Head of the Journalistic Projects Department and Director of MMLab, University of Navarra; Ana Alfageme, Head of Social Media, El País (Spain); the Argentinian typographer Eduardo Manso; Bieito Rubido, Director, Abc (Spain); Benjamín Lana, Director of Regional Newspapers, Vocento (Spain); and Vincent Termote, Market Director for Spain and Portugal, Nespresso.

 

The awards of the ÑH7 contest will be presented during the congress' closing dinner, which will take place on November 12th. The deadline for registration for the ÑH7 congress ends on November 3rd.
