More than 20 years of SNDE
The Society for News Design (SND) is an international organization of professionals in Journalism, with over 2,500 members in more than 50 countries, divided among 21 regions. It was created in 1979 in Reston, Virginia. Currently, its headquarters are located in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, USA.
The Spanish Chapter of the Society News for Design (SNDE), a non-profit organization, brings together professionals, professors and students of Journalism, Graphic Design and the Fine Arts with the aim of improving the quality of the press and communications, through excellence in the visual media.
The foundation of the SNDE took place at the 1st International Seminar on Press, Design and Computer Graphics in March 1987. The presidents of the SNDE from its creation have been Juan Antonio Giner, Antoni M. Piqué, María Moya and, currently, Javier Errea.
The Spanish Chapter has organized seminars for professionals in several cities in the United States and Europe. Among these were the Flying Seminars of the SND in Europe, an initiative of the Spanish Chapter. Since 1991, these seminars have been held in Zurich (Switzerland), Bergen (Norway), Stockholm (Sweden), Prague (The Czech Republic), Paris (France), Milan (Italy), Oporto (Portugal), Hamburg (Germany), Vienna (Austria), Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, La Coruña, Cadiz, Tenerife, Maó, Santiago de Compostela and Pamplona (Spain).
At present the SNDE annually organizes the International Malofiej Awards for Infographics and the ÑH Awards for the Best Journalistic Design for Spain & Portugal.
Location
The Communications Department of the University of Navarra has hosted the headquarters the SNDE since its inception. The 2008-2009 academic year coincided with the 50th anniversary of Communications Studies at this university, which is a pioneer in Spain.
